Deliverable 1 · IT/OT X-ray¶
Before you change anything in a city-builder game, you open the map. Where is the city hall? Where are the water plant, the power station, the depots? Which pipes and cables join them, and where does a citizen's request travel from the moment they ask until it is done? Only with that map can you plan the next district.
Deliverable 1 is that map for your company. Your group draws its IT/OT X-ray: the office side with its departments and systems, the operational side with its automation pyramid, one connection between both, and the whole journey of a customer's order from end to end. It is the first chapter of your digital transformation dossier, and every later deliverable builds on it.
What you will learn
- Describe a real company's departments and the IT systems they use, with sources
- Place a real company's plant technologies on the automation pyramid
- Design and justify one IT–OT connection: the data, the systems, the gain and the risk
- Draw the end-to-end journey of a customer's order and argue its advantages
- Integrate four individual sections into one coherent document, and defend your own section alone
What you hand in¶
| Format | One PDF per group, about 6–10 pages without the cover |
| Where | Google Classroom, assignment "D1 · IT/OT X-ray". The Coordinator hands it in |
| Deadline | Sunday 8 November 2026, 23:59 |
| Defence | Individual, in session 9, Monday 21 December 2026 (the same day as Deliverable 2) |
| Weight | 70% of the RA1 mark. The other 30% are the class activities of sessions 1 to 3 |
Every fact about your company needs a source
Everything you state as a fact about your company (what it does, its departments, its systems, its plant) must be found and cited: its website, annual report, the press, job offers, supplier case studies, Ibestat, the BOIB. Each citation has a title, the author or website, the link and the date you consulted it. What you cannot find, you may still propose with reasons, but you label it hypothesis. A claim without source or label counts as an error.
No generative AI
Generative AI is not allowed in this deliverable. A section written with AI or copied scores 0, and the defence will show it: you cannot explain a text you did not write.
The sections¶
Each member owns and signs one section (the individual part). With 3 members, Section D becomes part of the group part and everybody writes it together.
| Section | Criterion | What to write | Owner |
|---|---|---|---|
| A · The company, its departments and IT systems | RA1 b), d), e) business | What the company does, how big it is and where it operates. Its departments and, for at least four of them, the real IT system they use (ERP, CRM, PMS, online shop, BI...) and the data it manages. How digital technology has changed the way the company is organised (a new department, a role, a process). Which business technologies it should add or drop, with one reason each. | Individual |
| B · The OT side and the automation pyramid | RA1 e) plant | The company's physical operation: plants, installations, vehicles, buildings. Its automation pyramid (a diagram) with one concrete example per level: which sensor or actuator, what the PLC controls, what the SCADA shows, what level 3 manages, which ERP. Mark each example as cited or hypothesis. If the company publishes nothing about its plant, use a real cited case from the same sector to support your hypotheses. | Individual |
| C · One IT–OT connection | RA1 f) | One connection between a system of section B and one of section A: which data travel, from which system to which, in which direction, how often, what the company gains (with a number if you can find or estimate one), and which risk it opens and how it would be reduced. A small diagram. | Individual |
| D · The end-to-end journey and its advantages | RA1 g) | The journey of one customer order or service, from the first contact to delivery, invoice and after-sales, as a flow diagram with the system at each step. Where data are still typed twice today (or probably are). The advantages of connecting the whole journey for this company, and its costs. | Individual (4th member) |
| Introduction | RA1 a) | What the company is, why you chose it, and what digitalisation means for this company, using digitisation, digitalisation and digital transformation correctly. | Group |
| IT vs OT comparison | RA1 c) | A table comparing the company's IT and OT: what they manage, priority, lifespan, response time, updates, who runs them, and at least two similarities, all with examples from this company. | Group |
| Integration | RA1 a)–g) | One page that joins the four sections: one diagram with the pyramid, the connection of section C and the journey of section D, and a short conclusion. The four sections must talk about the same company, the same systems and the same names. | Group |
| Sources | All | One list of every source cited, in the same format. | Group |
| Group log | All | Who owned which section, who had which role, what you decided and when (template on the project page). | Group |
Roles in this deliverable¶
Choose one role each and write it in the group log. In Deliverable 2 everybody changes role and section.
| Role | In Deliverable 1 |
|---|---|
| Coordinator | Splits the sections, sets an internal deadline (we suggest Thursday 5 November), checks the group log and hands in the PDF |
| Source checker | Opens every link, checks every fact about the company has a source and every guess is labelled hypothesis |
| Technician | Draws the diagrams (pyramid, connection, journey) and checks that each system is on the right level |
| Editor | Format, spelling, one voice; the same name for the same system in every section. With 3 members, the Coordinator does it |
How it is assessed¶
| Part | Weight | What is assessed |
|---|---|---|
| Your section | 40% | Content correct for its criterion, real and cited sources, hypotheses labelled, reasons given, clear writing |
| Your defence | 20% | You explain your section in your own words, answer why, and know how it connects to another member's section |
| Group part | 40% | Introduction, IT vs OT comparison, integration diagram, coherence between sections, sources list, format and spelling, group log |
Rubric¶
| Part | Excellent | Adequate | Insufficient |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your section | Everything the table asks for, with real systems and real examples; every fact cited; hypotheses labelled and reasoned; terms used precisely | Most of what is asked; some facts without source or some generic examples; the main ideas are correct | Missing parts; generic text that could be about any company; facts without sources; levels or terms confused |
| Your defence | Answers fluently and with reasons; can say where each fact comes from; explains how a teammate's section links to yours | Answers the main questions with some help; knows the sources of the key facts | Cannot explain parts of the section, or does not know where its content comes from |
| Group part | The four sections clearly describe the same company and fit in one diagram; the comparison has differences and similarities with examples; clean format, one voice, complete log | The sections fit with small contradictions; comparison mostly correct; minor format problems | Four separate texts glued together; comparison generic or missing; no log; many spelling or format errors |
Programme rules: RA1 needs at least a 5. Late work is marked out of 5; more than 48 hours late is a 0. Plagiarism or unauthorised AI is a 0. If you fail RA1, the recovery is an individual task: you redo one section of this deliverable alone and defend it, for a maximum of 5.
The defence¶
On Monday 21 December 2026 (session 9) the groups work on their project while the teacher calls each student for 2–3 minutes. No paper and no computer: a conversation.
- Two questions about your own section. For example: "Why is this system on level 2 and not on level 3?", "Where did you find that the company uses this ERP?", "What would happen to your connection if the network went down?"
- One question about another member's section, to check that the group really put the sections together. For example: "Which step of the journey in section D uses the connection of section C?"
Before you hand in¶
| Check | Who |
|---|---|
| Every section has its owner's name | Coordinator |
| Every fact about the company has a working source; every guess says hypothesis | Source checker |
| The pyramid has one example per level, and each is on the right level | Technician |
| The section C connection appears in the section D journey and in the integration diagram | Technician |
| The same system has the same name in every section | Editor |
| The IT vs OT comparison includes at least two similarities | Editor |
| The group log is filled in and signed | Coordinator |
| One PDF, uploaded to Classroom before Sunday 8 November 2026 at 23:59 | Coordinator |
Start from what you did in class: the four parts of the express X-ray are the first draft of sections A to D.
